Like many great things, Store-it, a Wellington self-storage company all began from a random conversation.
It was in 2002 when the director of Store-it, Mike Price, happened to be chatting to a friend who works in the building industry, who mentioned he’d built some garage style storage lockers for one of his Lower Hutt clients.
With Mike’s entrepreneurial mind and his experienced background in both sales and marketing he got thinking. He’d always been keen to invest in commercial property; yet, he’d never in a million years imagined that one day he’d be the owner and director of a Wellington self storage business. However, when the unique opportunity to do so arose, he jumped at the chance.
He was shown a warehouse located in Ngauranga which happened to have been sitting empty for 18 months. Things happened at the right time, the conversation with his builder friend and the showing of the Ngauranga warehouse pushed him to further explore the idea. There was an opportunity in the market and he saw great potential in creating a new secure self-storage facility.
Hedid some thorough homework. He visited a number of different self storage companies in Wellington to check out their facilities and levels of customer service. Mike saw that there was a need for more self-storage units in the Wellington region and he knew he could also provide a better service. With all of this in mind, he embarked on creating and launching Store-it, a 100% family owned and operated business.
After months of carefully renovating, customising and equipping his Ngauranga warehouse, the family operated storage company, Store-it, opened its huge brightly orange painted doors in June 2003. Store-it rapidly set a benchmark for reliable and secure self-storage facilities in Wellington. Known for their friendly and ever-so helpful customer service, word spread and Store-it became the leading storage facility in Wellington.
Store-it lives by its philosophy that storage is all about people and their personal storage requirements, which is why Store-it is renowned for their excellent customer service in Wellington.
“If there are people out there who are prepared to put their goods into storage for some reason or other, those particular items are either personally or professionally valuable to them which is why it’s our duty to ensure that we take excellent care of their possessions,” says Mike.
But Store-it’s approach and vision isn’t only talk, no it’s much more than that. Store-it has really made a mark for itself and they’ve been recognised for their service and efforts by the wider industry and in 2006, they were awarded the Facility of the Year and they were also awarded runners-up for the Manager of the Year. As judged by the Self Storage Association of Australasia. Two years later in 2008, Mike was nominated and appointed as a Board member on the Self Storage Association of Australasia. In 2010 Store-it were awarded The Manager of the Year Award.
Store-it have made their name known and achieved a lot in the Australasian self-storage industry in an extremely short time frame. With a string of accolades, Store-it is New Zealand’s most awarded self storage facility.
Today, Store-it continues to thrive and grow. With their continuous strive for excellence when it comes to their high-class customer service and their desire to be the best they can be, Store-it continues to provide Wellington with “Australasian class” storage facilities. Store-it’s main aim is to provide their storage customers with secure and affordable self-storage units in Wellington, something that they continue to excel in.
Recently Store-it’s success story has grown with the development of a second self-storage facility in Lower Hutt.
Naturally as this growing Wellington storage company expands, the team does also. Their aim is to provide their Wellington and Lower Hutt clients with best customer service in the area. Ever since opening their doors, they’ve adopted a “can do” attitude when it comes to meeting every client’s storage needs.
Hailing from Durban, South Africa, Mike like many young people visited New Zealand for a 6-month backpacking stint and never left.
“I visited Queenstown for a short skiing trip. I caught the bug, fell in love with the country and just ended up staying here,” he explains.
After spending 6 months tripping around New Zealand, he thought it was time he got a ‘real job’ and he landed a sales and marketing job with Rhone Meriux, a veterinary pharmaceutical company.
His company ended up relocating up north to Auckland and this is where Mike took up a job at Dulux where he spent another 4 years.
Mike eventually met and married a Kiwi girl, Michelle, and has 3 kids, Joel, Ella and Lucy.
Like when starting any business, Mike has learnt many things. He candidly describes setting up and running his own storage company as a massive learning curve, but like any dedicated businessman, he wouldn’t change it for the world.
As for the future, the dedicated team aim to continue Store-it’s success with excellent customer service and self-storage facilities. Initially, the first move is to expand the Lower Hutt storage site and from there they will continue to work hard and improve on their already excellent Wellington storage facility. They eventually plan to expand their services and offer nationwide self-storage facilities in New Zealand.
Store-it’s team is made up eight dedicated and qualified staff including Mike.
